UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS ACTUALLY de QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS, ITS CAUSES, SYMPTOMS AND ITS TREATMENT

de Quervain's Tenosynovitis” (pronounced as “dih-kwer-VAINS ten-oh-sine-oh-VIE-tis”) is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of your wrist. If you have “de Quervain's Tenosynovitis”, it will probably hurt when you turn your wrist, grasp anything or make a fist. Sometimes it’s also called by its nickname of “Mommy Thumb” or “Mommy Wrist”.

de Quervain's Tenosynovitis” is a painful condition that affects the tendons in your wrist. It occurs when the 2 tendons around the base of your thumb become swollen or inflamed. The swelling causes the “Sheaths” (“casings”) covering the Tendons to become inflamed. This puts pressure on nearby nerves, causing pain and numbness.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF “de QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITS”

The most common cause of “de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis” is the chronic overuse of the Wrist. “Repetitive Movements” day after day causes irritation and pain. One common movement that causes it is lifting a child into a car seat. Another is lifting heavy grocery bags by the handles. Other causes could include a direct injury to the wrist or “Inflammatory Arthritis”.

Tendons are rope-like structures that attach muscle to bone. When you grip, grasp, clench, pinch or wring anything in your hand, two tendons in your wrist and lower thumb normally glide smoothly through the small tunnel that connects them to the base of the thumb. Repeating a particular motion day after day may irritate the sheath around the two tendons, causing thickening and swelling that restricts their movement.

You are more likely to develop “de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis” if:

(1) You are a woman.

(2) You are 40 years of age or older.

(3) Your hobby or job involves repetitive hand and wrist motions.

This is a very common cause.

(4) You have injured your wrist. Scar tissue can restrict the movement of your tendons.

(5) You are Pregnant. Hormonal changes during Pregnancy can cause it.

(6) You have “Arthritis”.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF “de QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITS”

Some of the possible symptoms “de Quervain's Tenosynovitis” may include:

(1) Pain near the base of your thumb.

(2) Swelling near the base of your thumb.

(3) Difficulty moving your thumb and wrist when you're doing something that involves grasping

or pinching

(4) A "sticking" or "stop-and-go" sensation in your thumb when you are moving it.

If the condition goes too long without treatment, the pain may spread further into your thumb, back into your forearm or both. Pinching, grasping and other movements of your thumb and wrist will further aggravate the pain.

HOW IS “de QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS” DIAGNOSED

To diagnose “de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis”, your medical Doctor may do a simple test. It is called the “Finkelstein Test”. First, you bend your thumb so it rests across your palm. Then you make a fist, closing your fingers over your thumb. Last, you bend your wrist toward your little finger. If you have tenderness or pain at the base of your thumb, you probably have “de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis”.

Other tests such as X-rays usually aren’t needed to diagnose this condition.

WHAT HAPPENED IF “de”QUERVAIN’S TENOSYNOVITIS” IS LEFT UNTREATED

Due to inflammation surrounding the Tendons that control the Thumb Movement, “de Quervain's Tenosynovitis” can cause pain and tenderness when moving the thumb or wrist. If left untreated, this pain may even spread up through the arm as well.

If this condition isn't treated, it can permanently limit your movement or cause the tendon sheath to burst. Once your symptoms are better, work to prevent the condition from happening again. Learning to live with “de Quervain’s Tenosynovitis” is not really the best option. Getting your condition treated as soon as possible is the best option to avoid any further damage to your Tendons.
